This is considered to be the best quality porcelain - known as Royal China or Paper China in this case. The latter term refers to the fact that these items use such a durable porcelain that they are able to make it thin enough so light from a flashlight will pass through, like through a sheet of paper. It usually has the 4 or 6 red characters on the bottom. Anyway, this is a set of 6 total bread and butter dishes. They measure just over 6 inches across. There are no chips and the paint is in good condition as well as the gilt, but it is not perfect.
