The best in the West in both quantity and quality!! Japanese art collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
The survey covers all works donated by Morse, Fenollosa, Bigelow, and purchased by Okakura Tenshin. The entire collection is revealed for the first time in 100 years in the official catalog of Japanese art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
The "First Survey Project of Japanese Art in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts," which involved leading researchers in Japanese art, began in 1991. Although some of the works were partially known, the museum re-examined all the works in its collection, including masterpieces that would undoubtedly be designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties if they had remained in Japan instead of being exported overseas. Each year, a genre to be surveyed was selected, and the survey was conducted carefully, with photographs taken. Many newly discovered works and valuable materials emerged from various parts of the dimly lit storage rooms. The first step toward realizing Okakura Tenshin's dream of a "comprehensive illustrated catalog and catalog" of Japanese art was finally taken.
This volume includes Buddhist paintings / Buddhist statues / Buddhist implements / Kasaya (Buddhist robes) / Noh masks / Ink paintings / Early Kano school / Rimpa
